Dr. Lorri Cobbins and Dr. Brian Braithwaite of The Aesthetic Institute of Chicago discuss BOTOX® Cosmetic techniques and the different approaches for men and women.

Chicago, IL – According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the 2012 statistics for nonsurgical procedures reveal that more people received BOTOX® Cosmetic, Dysport®, and other botulinum toxin type A based injections than ever before. In a recent pair of blog posts, Chicago plastic surgeons Lorri Cobbins, MD and Brian Braithwaite, MD provide some insight into the continued rise in popularity of these aesthetic enhancement products. They attribute part of the rising statistic to the increasing number of men who are now seeking to smooth fine lines and wrinkles with these quick injectable treatments.

Whereas, in the past, men made up a relatively small number of BOTOX® Cosmetic patients at The Aesthetic Institute of Chicago, they now represent nearly 30%. In a blog post titled: “The Rise in BOTOX® Cosmetic Popularity among Both Men and Women,” Dr. Cobbins and Dr. Braithwaite note that, while all patients seek a refreshed and rejuvenated appearance, the specific reasons individual men opt for BOTOX® Cosmetic treatments varies from person to person, including “seeking to improve social status or romantic relationships, reducing an angry appearance, or to remain competitive in the workplace.” They say this nonsurgical procedure appeals to a very wide audience due to the treatment’s effective results with nearly no downtime required. In fact, many of their Chicago plastic surgery patients visit the office for a BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment during their lunch hours. The doctors say that men are simply catching up with an existing trend, “taking advantage of BOTOX® Cosmetic benefits that women have been enjoying for a long time.”

In their follow-up post, “BOTOX® Cosmetic Goals Differ Between Men and Women,” Dr. Cobbins and Dr. Braithwaite point out the physiological factors of the skin that require special consideration, depending on the sex and aesthetic desires of the patient. “The facial muscles of men and women differ greatly, as does the thickness of the skin,” they say, in addition to the aesthetic differences men and women tend to prefer. For example, most women want to create more of an arch in their brow while men typically want to maintain a straight brow. By altering the technique in which BOTOX® Cosmetic is administered, Dr. Cobbins and Dr. Braithwaite are able to achieve aesthetic results that align with the individual goals of each unique patient. The plastic surgeons believe that this ability to custom-tailor each procedure for the patient has also added to BOTOX® Cosmetic’s overall popularity as a nonsurgical method of facial rejuvenation.
